When I think back to my youthful summer months spent with cousins,
I see the adventure hikes we took near my house beneath the Bighorn Mountains, the chilly dips we braved in the downtown outdoor pool, and the agony we felt when our arms and legs became riddled with mosquito bites. I also hear my grandmother’s voice when she caught us complaining about the itching. “Just put some bluing on it”, she’d say matter-of-factly. Bluing, a deep blue liquid meant for whitening laundry, was her solution to every cut, scrape, bug bite or other ailment. Oddly enough, it always seemed to take the sting away.
